The Dubai cooling market is splitting into two camps

Ten years ago the question was simple: buy an AC, install an AC, live under an AC. Now event planners, warehouse managers, villa owners and cafe operators are asking a second question, whether an evaporative air cooler can do the same job for a fraction of the running cost. The short answer is it depends on where you point it, how humid the air already is, and whether you own or rent. Here is what is actually shifting on the ground in the UAE right now, and how the two technologies compare when you take Dubai’s climate seriously.

What an evaporative cooler actually is

An evaporative air cooler, sometimes called a swamp cooler or desert cooler, works by pulling hot dry air through a wet pad. Types of evaporative coolers you will find in the UAE

  1. Personal or portable coolers. Small plastic units with a 10 to 30 litre tank, meant for a single person or a small room. Cheap to buy, limited reach, useful on a balcony in shoulder season.
  2. Domestic tower coolers. Slim, wheeled units for villa majlis, garages, or workshops. 40 to 80 litre tank, remote control, honeycomb pads.
  3. Industrial or commercial coolers. Big steel units, 100 to 300 litre tanks, high-CFM axial fans. Used for warehouses, event tents, outdoor cafes, construction sites.
  4. Ducted central systems. Permanent roof-mounted units with ducting to multiple rooms. Common in older UAE villas and rural buildings before central AC became standard.

Actual figures depend on your DEWA tariff slab the size of the unit, and how many hours a day you run it. But the ratio is consistent: an evaporative cooler uses somewhere between a fifth and a tenth of the electricity of a comparable AC.

By 2027, most large outdoor venues in the UAE will run hybrid setups, spot AC for VIP zones and evaporative cooling for the crowd. The energy math no longer favours full refrigeration outdoors.

How long can an evaporative cooler run without a break?

Practically speaking, as long as you keep water in the tank. There is no compressor cycle that needs rest, so an industrial cooler on a construction site or event site can run for 12, 18, even 24 hours straight. The pump is designed for continuous operation. The two limits are water supply and pad cleanliness. Units with a direct mains water connection can run indefinitely. Standalone tank units need refilling every 4 to 10 hours depending on size and fan speed.

Compare that with a domestic split AC, which is also designed for long runs but will consume a noticeable share of your monthly DEWA bill if you leave it on for a full day. The evaporative cooler barely moves the needle on electricity, but you will see the water meter tick up.

Most rental agreements include delivery within Dubai, initial setup, and pickup. Longer contracts often include water refills as an add-on, which matters if you do not have easy mains access at the venue.

So which one actually works in Dubai?

The honest answer is that neither one wins outright. For sealed indoor spaces, apartments, offices, retail, restaurants, air conditioning is the only sensible choice. It handles the humidity, it works in July and August, and it delivers a controllable temperature. Trying to cool a closed living room with an evaporative cooler in peak summer will leave you with a slightly damp, slightly cooler, muggy room.

For outdoor and semi-outdoor spaces, event tents, warehouses, workshops, construction sites, majlis with open sides, garden weddings, an evaporative cooler is often the better tool. It moves huge volumes of cooled air, costs almost nothing to run, and does not care about open doors. The trend in the UAE is clearly toward using each technology where it works best rather than defaulting to AC for everything. If your space is enclosed and needs precise temperature control, choose AC. If it is open, temporary, or seasonal, rent an evaporative cooler and save the electricity bill for something else.
